Nebraska Policy Team

Reports to: Jahne’ Maddock, Policy Director

This team member(s) would help us find stories to share in our newsletter/social media. This differs from our data collection team in that this would be more reading news articles and learning the stories of defendants as opposed to raw data collection.

    • Research past and current criminal cases where racial bias was likely a factor in the sentencing or wrongful conviction.
    • Draft a short write up of the case so that other volunteers and directors can learn about it.
    • Save and file any relevant articles to cases so we can pull the information up if need be.

Reports to: Megan Rollag, Executive Director

This team member(s) would bolster our research by finding relevant scholarly articles, empirical studies, and case law. This differs from death row research because instead of collecting research on specific inmate’s stories, this volunteer(s) would collect research on the RJA and how racial bias affects felony sentencing.

    • Research the RJA’s bill language in California (introduced April 2020) and Utah’s bill passed via recommendations from their sentencing commission.
    • Research previous (or old) studies on sentencing and racial disparity as well as brief Nebraska’s current sentencing process.
    • Find more relevant scholarly articles and empirical studies.
